Beatriz Baselga Cervera, Ph.D., DVM
About me
Originally from Spain, I am my family's first DVM and Ph.D. I identify as a Spanish native speaker woman and an immigrant. I have deep family roots, passionate about traveling, animals, food, and nature.
I did change careers, from veterinary medicine to research in basic microbiology. Stubborn by nature, I focus my energy on enjoying every second that I dedicate to my work. I am in love with laboratory work, but also take any opportunity to cross half of the state/world to jump in any pond for a sample. Coffee and a stimulating conversation can make my day.
My research focus is experimental microbiology with an interdisciplinary laboratory-field background, linking ecological, evolutionary, and applied scientific methods. I am currently working on the experimental evolution of multicellularity and complexity with cyanobacteria and yeast, and broadly interested in freshwater microbial diversity (particularly toxin-producing cyanobacteria and meroplanktonic microbes). 10+ years performing community-centered outreach and science communication.
